Kesällä 2015 kävin Museoviraston arkistossa lukemassa läpi vuoden 1957 neulakinnaskyselyn vastauskortit. Osa vastauksissa annetuissa tekniikkakuvauksista ei auennut ihan heti, ja olen myöhemmin lueskellut muistiinpanojani näistä epäselvistä, mieltä vaivaamaan jääneistä tapauksista.
Two years ago, in summer 2015, I visited in the archives of the National Board of Antiquities of Finland (NBA), and read the cards on which people had written their replies to the national Nalbinding Survey in 1957. Some of the descriptions were so ambiguous that I could not be sure what the informant had meant. Later on, every now and then, I have been reading through my notes of those obscure cases.
Tämän kesän löytö
One mystery solved

One of the informants had sent several small nalbinding stitch samples, and had named one of those samples "Half Carelian" (the sample was Russian Stitch 2+2+1, UUOOU/OUUOOO). The informant (I don't know if it was she or he) wrote that in Half Carelian and in Full Carelian stitches there was only one small difference. There was also a tiny drawing included. The informant wrote that in all the other stitch samples that were included, the connection stitch is F2 (two loops from the upper edge, from front to back), but that in Full Carelian the connection is made by taking first one loop from front to back ("one new"), and then one from back to front ("one old"), F1B1. See the first photo.
This kind of connection stitch is not mentioned in any other sources. The one exception is the connection of the Coptic Stitch found in ancient Egypt, the stitch type that resembles knit stitches.
